In 1997, Kimberly Dilosa founded YOUTHanasia Foundation, Inc. to “simply protect her younger sister and cousins” from the streets. They began to tell their friends, and out of genuine concern grew a nonprofit that trains youth to use cultural and artistic expression to create prevention and intervention programs that will help themselves and their peers. For the past 21 years, Kim has directly and indirectly kept teenagers alive, safe and off of the streets of Greater New Orleans through service learning, mentoring, emotional nurturing, grassroots fundraising, talent discovery and youth-led activism. Kim’s energy is contagious, and her knowledge of facts and statistics regarding teenaged youth is extraordinary.
This energy and knowledge coupled with Kim’s “outside of the box” creativity has resulted in her receiving local and national awards including: The BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD OF LOUISIANA ANGEL AWARD, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS COMMUNITY QUARTERBACK AWARD, ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION COMMUNITY HEALTH LEADER AWARD, and ESSENCE MAGAZINE POWERFUL WOMAN OF THE MONTH.
Most recently, Kim was named an inaugural W.K. Kellogg Foundation community leadership fellow (2014 — 2017). 1 of 24 leaders picked from a pool of 1500 nominees to transform New Orleans into a child-friendly city. In 2018, Kim and her husband, famed photographer John Dilosa, Jr. created FION Productions to produce philanthropic events that generate donations to support youth organizations and those who champion the cause of youth development. In an effort to offset negative youth-related media alerts in Greater New Orleans, Kim created “Future ICONS of NOLA”, a media platform that identifies and distributes the stories of iconic youth of color who live in the Greater New Orleans community.
